the making of cord

these photos were taken by my beautiful friend danielle. she was so kind to help me braid and top stitch the rug together. soon i'll have photos of "cord" at dirt star an event for the nqaf 2010.
this piece is the growth of "my mother's blood" series. i wanted to honor the amazing things my mother believed in and taught me. cord is made from fabric i was planning to use for an outdoor installation about my mom's cancer, that was cancelled when she died. i also collected fabric from my community and many people hung out with me and braided. my amazing partner commented about how this piece is about me allowing people to help and support me during this time of grieving. its also about transformation. not seeing death as an end. at dirt star the rug spilled out from a cotton wood tree and braids were woven into the fence, mingled with lavender, geranium, and honey suckle. it felt so good to hang out with folks and braid, talk and feel good. i am excited for "cord" to continue to grow.
